Need help with wireless sensor / actuator for a project.?

Can anyone suggest a better / cheaper technology for me. Basically I'm trying to get a device to show when something specific (not a motion sensor) is close to him. Example: My children had a toy Tonka, when a truck approached this specific small garage, the door opened for him and spoke. I basically want to duplicate the idea of openness. I'm trying to figure out what type of technology being used for something?
