Road new programmer?

I have all the needed software and resources to teaching and began writing code in any language, Id like. My ultimate goal over time is to create an application that reads the sensors and turns the engines or motors to set the 'X' the desired position. VB and Basic Stamp are different dialects of the same language. Sijnce hardware is different, many of the constructs do not exist in one other. I let the computer dictate hardware interface and language.
